Tourist arrested after 'treasure hunt' in Jerusalem

A US tourist is being held by authorities in Israel after allegedly digging for treasure in an ancient quarry.

According to reports, police believe the 19-year-old tourist, who has not been named, was on the look out for 'mythical buried treasure' in Zedekiah's Cave, known as Solomon's Quarries.

The tourist was found after spending the night in the cave - a five acre quarry beneath the streets of Jerusalem.

He is believed to have hidden there after closing time at the tourist attraction.

Authorities found evidence of digging and limestone rocks were discovered in his backpack.

The cave system is beneath the Muslim quarter and is thought to date back to the sixth century BC.

It is also an important ceremonial site for Freemasons.
