Travel industry urged to fight climate change and poverty

The tourism sector has the potential to act effectively on climate change and fight against poverty, according to the United Nations World Tourism Organisation.

The organisation is to campaign for a 'constructive approach' by the tourism industry, calling on it to work together to help transform the sector to meet climate and poverty "imperatives".

Responsible growth patterns must now address economic, social, environmental and climate sustainability, according to the UNWTO.

The organisation revealed that 'Tourism Responding to the Challenges of Climate Change' will be the theme for this year's World Tourism Day on September 27.

Assistant secretary-general Geoffrey Lipman said: 'UNWTO will mobilise its more than 150 member states and its affiliate members in the private, academic and destination communities, representing a network of thousands around the world, in an effort to raise awareness of the magnitude of the challenge and contribute to the global response.'
