American cruise passengers 'most annoying'

American cruise passengers are seen as the most annoying by their British counterparts.

A poll by cruise reviews and news website Cruise Critic found that many people are reluctant to take a cruise because they are worried about being stuck onboard with cruisers they don't like.

The nationality 47% of British passengers find most annoying on a cruise ship are Americans.

But Brits also don't like their own company with fellow UK cruisers coming in second (21%) on the list of the least favourite cruise companions.

Rounding out the top six after Americans and the British are Germans, Italians, French and Russians.

Cruise Critic editor-in-chief Carolyn Spencer Brown said: 'This survey is a bit of fun and in fact most cruise travellers are far too busy enjoying themselves to worry about their fellow companions.

'Modern cruise holidays on big ships involve a plethora of entertainment, activity and dining options, meaning that you are very unlikely to be stuck with anyone you don't want '✠unless of course, it's the better half.'

I've just returned from a fantastic 9-day Southern Caribbean cruise on Norwegian Jewel. There were many US passengers in addition to Brits, Germans and French holidaymakers. I have to agree with Carolyn Spencer who mentions how the design of modern ships enables passengers to enjoy peace and quiet on their own or the company of some 2,500 fellow passengers. Besides, in my experience US passengers are very out-going and friendly for the most part. My advice to would-be cruisers is to do your homework. These days you can find a combination of cruiseline, ship, and itinerary that would suit just about anyone - even the xenophobe landlubber.
