BA drops Manchester-New York

British Airways is to suspend daily flights from Manchester to New York JFK in October.

The Boeing 767 aircraft that operates the service is to be moved to Heathrow.

But the airline is to start serving New York from Gatwick with daily flights from October 27.

The new service mean that BA will fly 62 times a week from the capital to JFK as the Gatwick flights will operate in addition to 55 weekly flights from Heathrow.

The new transatlantic flights from Gatwick will operate on a four class Boeing 777, with First, Club World, World Traveller Plus and World Traveller cabins, that will be moved from Heathrow.

BA will also start new short haul routes from Gatwick this October with daily services to Oporto and Valencia.

Second daily services from Gatwick to Alicante and Turin will also be added from the end of October.

Flights to Warsaw will move from Gatwick to Heathrow at the same time.

General manager network planning Lynne Embleton said: ââ¬ÅâœThe new Gatwick service will give our customers even more choice when flying between London and New York.

ââ¬ÅâœNot only do we already have an extensive schedule from Heathrow to both JFK and Newark but next year we will launch business-only flights from London City.ââ¬~

  • The last time I checked...

...London was in Britain. I may as well say 'I can't believe they're still called BRITISH Airways... because they don't fly from Stornoway to New York direct!". British Airways will fly where the money is, end of. And if you are all now delighting in sending passengers on 'better' airlines, (If they were better why were you booking BA in the first place?) - or were you booking these 'better' airlines all along, which I assume is maybe BA pulled out?

  • drop the British!

Can BA seriously continue to call itself BRITISH Airways when the only airports it now truly serves is London? What's BRITISH about that? Once again they show they really don't care about anything outside of London - oh apart from the US maybe, agents still get 13% commission there.

  • Oh dear thats a shame

Well Lynne thats alright then !!!!! As long as London is looked after. I cannot think of one client that actually likes going from London let alone via London. There are several carriers that offer great options from the Midlands and Manchester so I don't think the self styled 'Worlds Favourite' will be greatly missed.

  • London Airways

There has been a MAN-NYC sevice since the 50's. Send my pax via Gatport Airwick? No way. DL CO direct and EI via DUB are the favourites.

  • BA dumps us yet again

So BA has finally turned its back on the north in favour of adding yet more capacity from the London airports, after the new Terminal 3 at Manchester was built for them. It's a poor state of affairs when the travelling public in the north have to rely on foreign carriers to get to the New York and the likes because the so called national flag carrier drops the regions in it yet again. There's no way I will be sending customers through London an BA when I can get them across the pond direct with other airlines. It's quicker and there's more chance the luggage will arrive with them as well.
