Solomon Islands receives almost 20% growth in tourism

The Statistics Division of the Department of Finance has released figures showing the Solomon Islands has received a 19.7% increase in visitors in 2007 compared to 2006.

The Department of Statistics in the Solomon Islands has recorded 13,748 international visitors compared to the 11,482 visitors in 2006.

Michael Tokuru, General Manager Solomon Islands Visitors Bureau said, Ã¢â¬ÅâœThis news is another win for the Solomon Islands. Now the travel warning from Australia has been downgraded because of our political stability being recognized, 2008 should show even further improvement in growth. There are also increased air services to the Solomon Islands from Australia and an increase in hotel beds.Ã¢â¬~

He said, Ã¢â¬ÅâœTravellers are now discovering that the Solomons are truly somewhere different."

"They're discovering that the Solomon Islands is a true piece of paradise just over two hours from Brisbane."

"There is no where so close to Australia where you can snorkel over war wrecks and giant clams as big as sofas, surf on an uncrowded break or dive with the worlds best underwater marine life."
