Budget-conscious travelers are increasingly turning away from luxury and even-mid-level hotels in favor of hostels.
In the US alone, there was a 23% increase in bookings there last year, according to Hostelworld.com.
"We are seeking a growing trend in the travel industry fueled by uncertain economic times. Although, many people are not willing to give up their travel plans, they are finding more economical ways to do it," said Niamh Ni Mhir, Hostelworld.com's Chief Marketing Officer. He added:
"Most hostels today provide private rooms, free internet and restaurants, breaking the perception that hostels are only an option for young backpackers exploring Europe. Hostelworld.com represents more than 16,000 hostels in more than 168 Countries, so no matter where someone is looking to visit, hostels are always an option."
Africa and Peru have been among the fastest growing markets for hostel-users, according to the association.
