Keel laid for new Costa ship

The keel of new Costa Cruises ship Deliziosa has been laid at the Fincantieri shipyard in Italy.

The key point in the construction of the lineââ¬â¢s 15th ship comes as the line prepares for the 2,828-passenger vessel to enter service in 2010.

Costaââ¬â¢s fleet expansion includes the introduction of five new ships by 2012, all built in Italy by Fincantieri for a total cost of 2.4 billion euros.

The 92,700 gross tonne Costa Deliziosa will be sister ship to the Costa Luminosa.

Fincantieri is currently building three new Costa ships in its yards. In addition to the Costa Deliziosa, the Italian ship builder is completing Costa Luminosa and Costa Pacifica (total guest capacity of 3,780 and 114,500 gross tonnes), respectively the 13th and 14th members of the fleet, which are being fitted out and will be delivered in spring 2009.

In addition to Costa Pacifica, Costa Luminosa and Costa Deliziosa, two sister ships of Costa Pacifica will enter service in spring 2011 and 2012.

The Costa fleet will then be 17-strong and carry some 46,400 passengers, an increase of 50% on present capacity.
