British Hospitality Association chief executive Bob Cotton is to become chairman of the Tourism Alliance.
He is to succeed Ros Pritchard, chief executive of the British Holiday and Home Parks Association, who has been chairman for the last year.
Cotton said that pressures on the tourism industry in the current economic climate meant that there were real challenges ahead.
ââ¬ÅâWe need to ensure that the government takes tourism seriously ââ¬' which it has failed to do in the past,ââ¬~ he said. ââ¬ÅâThis is why the Alliance launched its ââ¬ËTake Tourism Seriouslyââ¬â¢ campaign.
ââ¬ÅâThe recent report by the House of Commons Culture committee re-emphasised the need for the campaign.
ââ¬ÅâIt highlights the weaknesses of the governmentââ¬â¢s present approach to the industry.
ââ¬ÅâTourism cannot be viewed as an ââ¬Ëafterthoughtââ¬â¢ but as a key sector of the UK economy. The Alliance has a big part to play in ensuring that government recognises this.ââ¬~
