Hotline set up for Olympic ticket scam victims

ABC news says that it is believed thousands of fake tickets have been sold for Olympic events and a hotline has been established for Australians caught up in a fake Olympic ticket scam.

The United States-based website Beijingticketting.com looks like an official website for the Games, but it is believed to have sold thousands of fake tickets.

In Australia, the New South Wales Government is spearheading efforts to establish the extent of the fraud.

From 9:00am AEST today those affected by the scam are asked to ring a national hotline number.

NSW Fair Trading Minister Linda Burney says the complaints will be collected for the consumer watchdog.

"We'll collect as much information as possible for the ACCC [Australian Competition and Consumer Commission] as well as international law enforcement agencies," she said.

Ms Burney says the Government will also try to negotiate with hotels and airlines to try and recover funds for those people who now have to cancel their trip.
