The credit crunch is prompting travellers to switch from the plane to the train, according to the latest poll from GDS provider Amadeus.
The company says a recent online poll conducted among business and leisure travel agents to gauge how soaring fuel prices are affecting travel patterns revealed a marked move towards rail.
Some 85% of leisure agents believe the cost of oil is having a major impact on demand for flight bookings, with 51% of business agents echoing this.
The poll also revealed great optimism within the industry despite the current economic downturn.
Both leisure and business agents told Amadeus they are experiencing an increase in travel bookings during the first six months of 2008, compared to the same period last year. TMCs were the most buoyant, with 61% seeing an increase in travel booking activity whilst 45% of leisure agents felt the same.
