Gustav forces almost 2m evacuate New Orleans

Almost two million people have fled New Orleans as the city braced itself for the arrival of Hurricane Gustav later today.

The storm has already killed up to 100 people on its path through the Caribbean.

Streets were deserted as residents and tourists blocked roads to try and escape the impending hurricane.

Airlines have cancelled flights to and from New Orleans for today and tomorrow and are advising passengers to check with their websites for updated flight information.

Local officials have taken no chances in evacuating the city in an effort to avoid the impact of Hurricane Katrina in 2005 which left more than 1,500 people dead.
