Hong Kong airlines lower surcharges

HONG KONG - The Hong Kong Civil Aviation Department has given approval for six Hong Kong airlines, including Cathay Pacific Airways, to reduce surcharges on passenger routes in the period from October 1 through November 30, 2008.

Cathay Pacific will reduce the surcharges on short-haul routes from the original HK$231 to HK$196, a decrease of 15 percent. For its long-distance routes, the surcharges will be lowered by 10 percent from the original HK$924 to HK$832.

The Civil Aviation Department said that the adjustment of surcharges has achieved a balance between ensuring the interests of passengers and reducing the burden on airlines.

It said the department would continue to investigate and adjust the surcharges at specific times.
