Travelzoo pays $1.7m for domain name

Global online media company Travelzoo has paid $1.76 million in cash for the internet domain name fly.com.

The company is to use the name for a new information website to be launched this month.

Senior vice-president and general manager of search products Brian Clark said: "We are delighted to acquire fly.com for our new offering.

"The name is a perfect match for Travelzoo's renowned approach: simple, fun, and world class.

"Where others see doom and gloom we see opportunities to serve travellers and advertisers with innovative approaches to finding the best values in travel."

  • Missing the point

Travelzoo have invested in an appreciating asset. It is a memorable domain name, that will never be forgotten. According to Google there are on average 13.6 million searches per month for the term "fly". Properly optimised fly.com should easily take the number one slot on Google worldwide for "fly" and many related searches. There are another 1.83m searches each month for "fly to". I would expect this new site to be offered to 250-300m Search Engine visitors seeking "fly" related search terms each year in the natural listings. The $1.7m will prove to be a shrewd investment, gaining a huge search engine exposure and at next to zero cost to the P/L account. On the basis that surplus cash has no value left in the deposit account, wise investors may consider it time to buy a domain name that reflects what their business does.

  • Buzz off

Spending &#pound;1m for a web site name "fly.com" should of ment prices could of been considerabily less using a cheaper name. Might I suggest travelrookers.com

A total waste of $$ for a web domain. How much of their ad revenue will it take to pay for this one?
