No sharing rooms, Malaysia tour companies told

KUALA LUMPUR ââ¬' Malaysiaââ¬â¢s Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ng Yen Yen has threatened that tour operators who force their male and female tour guides to share rooms will have their licences revoked.

Malaysian Women Tourist Guide Association (MWTGA) said there was a general lack of apathy among those in the industry towards sexual abuse and several victims who had reported such incidents were often threatened or given money to keep quiet.

The association said tour companies forced their male and female guides to share rooms to save money.

Following a meeting between tour guides and the tourism minister, MWTGA communications officer Grace Tan said she had encountered more than 200 women who claimed they were sexually abused after they were forced to share rooms with their male colleagues.

She said the ruling announced by Dr Ng was a beacon of hope for the 1,400 registered female tour guides nationwide.
