CAIRNS - The Tropical North Queensland tourism industry has stepped into the breach left by the Hunt Resort on Fitzroy Island to ensure the promised holidays for Victorian emergency service volunteers go ahead.
The $100 million Hunt Resort on the Great Barrier Reef was placed in the hands of receivers and administrators last week.
The resort offered 500 victims of the Victorian bushfires a week's free holiday.
Tropical North Queensland CEO Rob Giason said, ââ¬ÅâImmediately after the bush fires TTNQ contacted its members to see what could be done to help.
ââ¬ÅâWe talked to the appropriate agencies in Victoria, and asked if hosting emergency service volunteers would be of assistance.
ââ¬ÅâOur members generously responded with pledges of accommodation and tours valued at around $150,000.ââ¬~
Giason added, ââ¬ÅâWhen the fire authority was approached with a proposal to replace the Fitzroy Island holidays we assured them that the offers made by our members for the emergency service workers could be extended to victims.
ââ¬ÅâIf there is any shortfall in meeting the needs of our fellow Aussies Iââ¬â¢m confident the tourism industry will step up to the plate.ââ¬~
