Flu causes concern, but few cancellations

In Southern Ilinois, Mexico is a vacation hot spot for travelers, David Coracy of B and A Travel Service said.

"Mexico, especially Cabo, Cancun and the Riviera Maya, is a very popular destination for people from this area year-round," he said. "We're been getting lots of calls but no cancellations yet."

Coracy said he doesn't offer advice to travelers, only facts. "There are no restrictions on travel to Mexico, but people should be aware there is a new strain of flu and that they should use proper hygiene - just as they would if they wanted to avoid picking up the flu here," he said. "At the present time, there are no reported cases of the flu in any of the resort towns and the major outbreak is in Mexico City, which is about 900 miles from the most popular travel destinations."

Angie Roach of Travel-R-Way in Du Quoin said she is also receiving calls from concerned travelers, but none have decided against travel to Mexico.

"Some are really thinking about rearranging their plans, either postponing their trips or going somewhere else," Roach said.

She also advises travelers buy trip insurance, which allows the cancellation of travel for any reason.
