Missing plane's debris discovered

A search plane has identified debris believed to be from the missing Air France Airbus 330 in the Atlantic Ocean.

A three-mile strip of wreckage was spotted 400 miles off Brazil’s coast and a Brazilian navy ship has been despatched to begin sifting through it.

Flight AF 447 was bound for Paris from Rio de Janeiro with 228 people on board when it went missing on Monday. Three days of mourning have been declared in Brazil and France will hold a series of services to remember the missing

If it is confirmed that all 228 people on Flight AF 447 are dead, it will be the worst loss of life in Air France's history.

It is hoped that search teams will find the plane's cockpit voice and data recorders, which will give information about what happened to AF 447.

But Brazil’s defence minister Nelson Jobim said that recovering the devices could be difficult.

"It could be at a depth of 6,500ft-9,800ft in that area of the ocean," he said.
