Skiers hit by economic downturn

Skiers are not fanatics who will go on a winter holiday regardless of economic conditions, according to new research.

Independent financial planning experts Cavendish Ware surveyed 100 of its clients, from various backgrounds, in May 2009, and found that 65% of those who were regular skiers would sacrifice their winter holiday rather than their summer holiday if they were forced to make a choice.

However, speaking at a breakfast presentation on the ski market, on behalf of specialist Erna Low, Cavendish Ware managing director Adrian Ware revealed that 85% of those regular skiers said it was very important for them to continue to go skiing if at all possible.

People perceive themselves to be poorer in the current economic climate, even if the reality is different, the research found.

Some 81% said they felt poorer than they did 12 months ago, although 61% said they did not have less net spendable income than they had this time last year.

Only 33% said the outlook for the future was positive, with 35% claiming it was average and 32% citing it as poor.

So, 65% of skiers from a sample of 100 people who are clients of one wealth management firm would keep their summer holiday over their winter holiday if forced to - but for most of them it's not a choice they are having to make. Not one to get overly stressed about!
