New Iberia boss key to BA merger discussions

The prospects of British Airways sealing a merger with Iberia appear to have improved with a new chairman and chief executive coming in to the Spanish carrier.

Antonio Vazquez, described as a ‘proven dealmaker’, is seen as a likely catalyst in talks with BA which have failed to make headway for almost a year.

Iberia said departing chief Fernando Conte told the board at the start of 2009 that he wanted to step down before his 60th birthday next March.

BA’s CEO Willie Walsh said: "We are confident that his [Vazquez's] business and leadership skills will ensure that the relationship with British Airways will continue to develop.

"We look forward to working with him on all matters including the ongoing merger discussions."
