Bolt boost for Jamaica tourism

 

 

World record breaking runner Usain Bolt is set to boost sports tourism to his native Jamaica.

 

The impact of Bolt breaking the world 100m record at 9.58 seconds at the world athletics championships in Berlin was described as "inestimable" by the country’s tourism minister Edmund Bartlett. 

 

"Sports tourism had a shot in the arm," he said. 

 

"The Jamaica Tourist Board and the Ministry are now actively pursuing plans for strengthening the links between sports and tourism. 

 

"The kind of partnerships that we have developed in Berlin between TUI Germany, PUMA and the JTB is the way to go to effectively promote sports tourism in Jamaica."

 

The minister indicated that the 2012 Olympic Games in London was an iconic target event to create the overall programme for the athletics component of the strategy. 

 

In addition to athletics, the sports strategy includes four other key disciplines including cricket, football, golf, and netball.
