Around 3,500 airlines face being banned from European airports unless they meet European Union rules over their CO2 emissions.
The airlines, named earlier this week in the Official Journal of the European Union, have been ordered to submit details about their environmental credentials by the end of this month.
In response, the International Air Transport Association said airlines should submit their EU emission reports ââ¬Åâunder protestââ¬~ but should first consult their legal departments.
It said airlines should comply with the EU's requirements to avoid being penalised when the European Emissions Trading Scheme comes into force in 2012.
Penalties include a ban on operating within Europe.
Some EU-member states, including the UK, Germany, and Italy, have managed to postpone the deadline until next month.

3500 airlines? I wouldn't have thought there to be 3500 airlines that operate to and within Europe.....

Maybe Craig could share with us the research he has which shows that India and China are not doing anything about climate change. Perhaps they aren't, but missing out on the EU market because of it is a pretty good way to get them to start. And the argument that what the rest of the world does will make little difference is just stupid. As our most successful retailer constantly reminds us, every little helps.

Craig, you remind me of someone I've heard of, but I know it's not you. This person suddenly became very worried about CC. You know how UK and US people like acronyms 'â this may be a problem. Well, this person (let's call him John Smith 'â JS) heard that CC was an issue. That something had to be done to deal with it. That we could not keep doing the same mistakes. Etc, etc. He said: Why don't they leave my darling Claudia Cardinale alone? I know that her life is far from perfect, but spending all that time and money worrying about her, that's not good 'â if only with that money they could bring her back in time... (Again I know that this person is not you). Then someone explained to JS that CC stands for Climate Change. And he replied 'â what? Is climate changing? Didn't notice anything. How's that? Again, I know this person is not you 'â you must be YY' Generation and JS is clearly before Babyboomer's. But back to the point. Let me introduce to you Lord Stern: He is great in explaining things that may be difficult to understand to some of us in a simple way. Enjoy: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EQP3vajvWg0

We won't know for 100 to 1000 years if there is in fact ANY climate change. Many scientists (without a vested interest) are predicting the next ige age & also say man has virtually NO impact on climate change. Agree there's too much pollution, but if people drive rather than fly, there will be MUCH MUCH more pollution !!!

Guess IATA is smarting given that the EU is now telling the 'god' of air transportation what to do. Now we should expect to hear Bisignani asking for government handouts or tax breaks to ameliorate the harsh financial conditions which airlines are facing.

We have to begin by somewhere, don't you think?

emissions trading scheme - for what ? Can't see China & India signing up for any such nonscience, so what the rest of world does, will mkae very little difference. Must be lots of kickbacks in this dodgy scheme !!!
