Singapore Airlines named Airline of the Year


LONDON ââ¬' Singapore Airlines has been named Airline of the Year in the 2009 OAG Airline Industry Awards.

Singapore also took out several of the category awards, including Best International First Class, Best Transpacific and Best Europe to Asia/Australasia airline.

Known as the ââ¬ÅâœOscars of the Airline Industry,ââ¬~ 2009 marks the 27th anniversary of the awards, which are voted for by frequent flyers around the globe.

Winners of the 2009 OAG Airline Industry Awards include:

âˆ' Airline of the Year: Singapore Airlines

âˆ' Best Transatlantic Airline: Virgin Atlantic

âˆ' Best Business Class: Continental Airlines

âˆ' Best Airline based in North America: Continental

âˆ' Best Airline Based in the Middle East/Indian Sub-Continent: Emirates

âˆ' Best Low-Cost Airline: Southwest

âˆ' Best Airline Based in Central South America & Caribbean: LAN

âˆ' Best Airline based in Africa: South African Airlines

âˆ' Best Airline Based in Central/Eastern Europe: CSA Czech Airlines

âˆ' Best Airline Based in Australia/Pacific: Qantas

Winners are chosen by asking frequent flyers to consider which airlines they have flown in the past 12 months in each of the award categories and rank their top three airlines for each category.

All votes were cast online. The results were calculated using a ratio of ââ¬Åâœmentions to best,ââ¬~ taking into account how many times an airline was voted 1st, 2nd or 3rd by each traveler.

All votes were analysed by OAG to ensure that they were placed in the correct category and to guarantee that all airlines and airports, irrespective of size, competed on a level playing field.

    South African airlines happen to include South African Airways, which presumably is your winner? Other airlines in South Africa are independent and most [if not all] do not fly intercontinental.
