Experts select top cruise destinations

Alaska has been rated as the world’s top cruise destination.

The US wildness state is followed by the Galapagos Islands, the Arctic and Antarctic Peninsula.

Then comes the Black Sea, St Petersburg, Venice, the Mediterranean in general, the Corinth Canal and the Middle East.

The top places to cruise were selected by a panel of 13 experts for the consumer Cruise Show which takes place in London Olympia on March 27-28.

The panel comprised: Wendy Atkin Smith (Viking River Cruises UK); Jane Archer (Telegraph Travel cruise correspondent); Gary Buchanan (travel writer); Andrew Cochrane (Noble Caledonia); Bill Gibbons (Passenger Shipping Association); Andy Harmer (The Cruise Portfolio); Lol Nichols (Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines); Stephen Park (NCL UK); Jo Rzymowska (Royal Caribbean Cruise Line); Steve Read (Sky Travel cruise correspondent); Carolyn Spencer Brown (Cruise Critic); Colin Stone (Swan Hellenic); and Douglas Ward (Berlitz Guide to Cruising).

Archer said: "One of the best things about cruising is the diversity of places you can visit on a cruise ship.

"There are all the iconic cities in the Mediterranean and Baltic, which attract huge numbers of cruisers, but then you can also get way off the beaten track, discovering remote and exotic places and seeing sights that non-cruisers can only dream about."
