Airlines saw a 43 per cent jump in ancillary revenues in 2009 compared with the previous year, according to a new report by Amadeus and consultancy group IdeaWorks.
Their report showed that 96 airlines worldwide earned €11 billion from ancillary sales such as check-in baggage, in-flight refreshments and commission from car and hotel bookings, up from €7.68 billion the previous year.
Budget airline easyJet saw an astonishing leap in ancillary revenue, which rose €212m to €608m last year, closing the gap on Ryanair which saw only a €38m increase to €663m.
The two low-cost carriers were the only European airlines listed in the top 10 for ancillary sales; Ryanair ranked in fifth position and easyJet came in sixth.
The full report will be available in the autumn 2010 release of the Amadeus Guide to Ancillary Revenue by IdeaWorks.
