Hurricane hits Caribbean holidays

At least seven cruises and several flights have been diverted in the Caribbean as Hurricane Earl sweeps across the region towards the US east coast.

Carnival, Royal Caribbean and Norwegian Cruise Line have re-routed ships to avoid the storm, which is due to reach the Turks and Caicos islands later today. American Airlines has rescheduled some flights to the Caribbean islands.

Forecasters said the hurricane might hit the east coast of America later this week and it is expected to reach North Carolina by Thursday or Friday.

Heavy rain could sweep across from North Carolina to Washington, Philadelphia and New York City.
