Hurricane could hit transatlantic flights

Transatlantic flights may be grounded over the next few days as Hurricane Earl batters the east coast of America.

Reports on the BBC said airlines have warned flights from New York and Boston might have to be cancelled if the hurricane continues its path northwards.

It quoted Continental Airlines saying storms were likely to make air travel difficult, which could force it to cancel flights from Newark Liberty International Airport.

Thousands of people have been evacuated along the US east coast, and forecasters have warned Hurricane Earl could move north as far as Maine and Nova Scotia in Canada over the weekend.

In New York, the Red Cross is preparing to open storm shelters on Long Island for up to 60,000 people if houses are destroyed.
