Lufthansa and Swiss to levy card charges

Lufthansa and Swiss will later this year introduce a -£4.50 fee on all payment card bookings made through travel agents for economy seats.

The charge, from November 2, will be for both credit and debit card bookings and follows British Airways' decision to levy a charge for card bookings through agents earlier this year.

However BA only charges on credit card bookings, but Lufthansa's charges will also apply to bookings made with a debit card.

A spokesman for Lufthansa said: "The costs we receive from credit card bookings are considerable, so we have to pass on a certain amount to those booking.

"It does also apply to debit card bookings because our system cannot distinguish between the cards in the UK."

  • only through travel agents?

Swiss statement says "As of 2 November 2011, the Optional Payment Charge (OPC) will apply in all SWISS sales channels to payment made by credit card." To me, that includes their own website, not just travel agents, no?
Note from editor: It is for ticket purchases through all channels, but we were making the point that the charge applies when buying through an agent.
