Airlines warn of disruption as Portugal airport security staff go on strike


Airlines are warning passengers of disruption as security companies at Portugal's airports begin strike action from today.

Staff of the private companies Prosegur and Securitas, who are responsible for passenger security checks, have announced they will be striking for two hours at the start of each shift, starting this morning at 4am.

They will strike again after lunch from 2pm to 4pm local time.

National airport management company ANA has advised passengers travelling over the next five days to keep hand-luggage to a minimum and to expect delays.

British Airways said it would operate flights as normal but warned passengers they may face longer waits at security checks. It said the departures area at Lisbon Airport will be worst affected.

"If you are flying from Lisbon Airport, please allow extra time to make your way through the airport and arrive in good time for your flight," it said.

"Although the industrial action is beyond our control and will affect many airlines, we are sorry for the potential delays to your travel plans."

TAP Portugal is advising passengers not to travel with hand luggage, if possible, to avoid long waits at security checks.

EasyJet said it strongly recommends passengers allow extra time for their journey through the airport to be able to get to the gate on time.

"Although this is outside of our control we're sorry for any inconvenience caused," it said.

Meanwhile, baggage handlers at Alicante Airport are also due to strike from tomorrow until Monday April 17.

Ryanair is advising customers to carry hand luggage only.

It said if passengers have to check in bags, please arrive to the airport at least three hours before scheduled time of departure.
