Agents nervous more shops will shut

Travel agents fear more shop closures after Thomas Cook revealed that it was shutting a further 17 shops last month.

The retailer had already announced it was closing 39 shops in February.

There was also a spate of store closures last year, starting with 12 in April and a further 28 in October.

When asked in a TravelMole poll if they thought more shops would close, 56% of respondents said yes.

  • Brexit is an opportunity...

...for the retail trade. Travel has become much easier to book over recent years and the lack of visas and other restrictions for travel between EU countries is one reason. In spite of the fact that many in the travel industry backed "remain" now we are leaving the EU there will be opportunities for agents since the possible introduction of visas and other restrictions will make many potential travellers seek the help of a travel agent. Agents should make sure that they are ban up to date with the latest travel restrictions and get known in their area as "the local expert". Brexit might be a threat, but it is up to travel agents to make it an opportunity.
