United Airlines flight in mid-air drama

A United Airlines' flight from San Francisco was forced to perform an emergency landing after the cover was torn from one of its engines in mid-air.

The cover blew off about 35 minutes before the Boeing 777 from Honolulu was due to land, said local reports.

Passengers on Flight 1175 told of a loud bang before the plane started shaking.

The pilot sent out a distress call and crew followed 'all the necessary protocols to safely land the aircraft', the airline said in a statement.

The plane landed with emergency services on standby, said Hawaii Department of Transportation spokesman Tim Sakahar.

The pilot and crew were praised for doing a 'good job' of landing the plane 'calmly and safely'.
