Internet inspections edging out personal visits from meeting planners?

Are site inspections for meeting planners going the way of the buggy whip and the dodo?

An amazing 61.4% of 192 respondents to MiMegasite.com's latest poll said they would choose a meeting property based just on information, specs and photos found on the internet  --  without even conducting an in-person site inspection.

Breaking it down some more:
  • The percentage of respondents who said they would do it under most circumstances was 28.6%.
  • The percentage of those who said they would do it only if they were short on time was more than one third.
  • The remaining more than one third of respondents said that they would not book a property under any circumstances without first conducting an in-person visit.

"As the sophistication of Web sites continues to advance, many properties now offer 360-degree views of guest rooms, meeting space, banquet space, and other areas, allowing planners to get a solid idea of a property's feasibility for their meetings," said MiMegasite. "And when it comes to judging the service staff at a property--which obviously cannot be done over the Web--many planners rely on word-of-mouth anecdotes and recommendations if they are not going to conduct an in-person site visit."

Will the trend continue? Probably.

Depends on supplier's actions
When everyone complains about being time starved, and meeting planners or corporate buyers not being an exception, I'd say the trend will definitely continue. One key factor influencing this is no doubt how suppliers will embrace user generated content. The more a decision maker can learn about a property or destination, including reviews and opinions that complement what suppliers present about themselves the better they will be able to form their own opinion and make a decision. To speed up the development, will require a large enough number of such opinions to make them more representative and less individually biased than only a few.

Questionable
I interview 70-100 meeting planners a year and have to question this finding. Sure, the web helps with the tire-kicking. It helps planners quickly narrow down their list of properties and destination, but nothing replaces a site inspection.

The site inspection isn't a free trip. It helps planners check our service - remember that? you can be a great looking property with crap service and poorly trained staff. The site also allows planners to check out the real condition of the property versus how it looked when the photos were taken. And it lets them judge distances, amenities, and challenges.

If I were a client I don't think I'd want to work with a planner who hasn't been to the place he/she is spending my money and risking my reputation and business.
