I would be interested to know the criteria by which you choose the winners for the 'best tour operator' category. Many thanks, Hayley

Justin Reid 16 May 2008, 09:52:04 GMT Criteria for Awards Having a delighted and vested interest in these awards - just wondering what criteria the Tourist Board Awards are judged on? Content, functionality, usability - is there a weighting scheme applied. thanks

Andrew Bird 27 February 2008, 21:46:38 GMT 2008 When are the 2008 awards and where do you make nominations?
 | | |
How does one get nominated? Nominations are open to be made by any TravelMole reader. In this case it's quite possible that somebody was SO impressed they felt the need to nominate your site. Normally it's the web developer.

Philippe Kjellgren 21 May 2007, 02:50:14 GMT How does one get nominated? Dear TravelMole,
One of our employees found out by coincidence that our company was shortlisted when visiting Indaba in South Africa.
I was very honored and happy to see our website listed among the finalists, but I am curious to know how does one get nominated and what are the criteria.
Our website is http://www.kiwicollection.com and the category is Hotels.

How to rate websites I do agree that some of the nominations look strange. However, a site visit will quickly confirm the validity of the nomination (or not).
Rating websites can be subjective. At this year's Travel Technology Show, in association with Ellion, Equinus offered free website evaluations. We were overwhelmed with the take up and have only just completed the reviews. It was a very interesting exercise indeed!
The review process was structured, objective and delivered practical recommendations to improve sites. If there was a common thread it was the low visibilty of the sites on search engines. A sample review can be found on the Equinus website - www.equinus.com. This is a real travel website and the criteria applies to any site. But no matter how good the site, unless it can be found by a search engine, it won't get the visitors to turn into customers. Mike Cogan Equinus

Web Award Comments
I would like to thank all those who have added comments to the site about the awards. We are always trying to improve and refine them. The interest that is shown in them is very flattering.
We obviously have some 'real' experts out there who appear to have knowledge beyond most of us. I would be delighted if they could make themselves known to us and we can consider them for next years judging panel.

Got Opinions 11 May 2007, 09:25:12 GMT Fair Point I agree that the competition should be fair and not 'stacked' in favor of the bigger companies. However surely when sub-standard websites make the final shortlist, it takes the edge off the competition.

Sour grapes?! Why all the criticism? Where's the compliments for TM spending time, money and effort to give the travel industry chance to pat people on the back for their efforts?
I think it is great to see minnows against the big boys, and it not just being a set of awards given to those who have spent the most money. One day, I hope to see our website short-listed too, but for now, congrats to all the finalists and to TM for giving everyone a FAIR chance!!

PS. I second the proposal for an accommodation category, for obvious reasons!

Carl Hendrie 10 May 2007, 14:12:43 GMT What a let down... Hi,
Who exactly is on the board of judges for these web awards? I am a web developer and as such find the content of many of the nominated companies extremely weak. I think that the panel need a stronger knowledge of web based functionality and interactive content.
This years nominations have weakened the credibility of the awards....better luck next year...

Alan Armstrong 10 May 2007, 14:09:36 GMT Got to agree Looking at last years nominations to this years, there is no comparison.
Picking one of the categories that I nominated a company for, Car Rental. - Last Year was holidayautos - who have since updated there site and it looks 10 times better than any shown above. usrentacar.co.uk - which again is 10 times more innovative than any of the above and Budget.co.uk which is a better all round site.
Plus carhiresearch is a comparison site !!!
Seems a bit strange but good luck to the winner..........which I would have thought is hands down AVIS. !!!

Got Opinions 10 May 2007, 13:44:46 GMT In reply Serious Opinions here:
CC2C.com, looks very basic and as if it has been hashed together in 5 minutes. In summary UGLY.
Ocean Village, easily breakable and that should have been part of the judges criteria.
Id hate to see what other websites were turned down? Did people nominate a 'blog' for this award!!!
 | | |
New category for next year please? Hi, can you have a general category for "Accommodation" next year please?
You have one for hotels, but that I assume does not include other forms of accommodation such as apartments, guest houses, B & B's, villas etc.
Many thanks

Claire Quarrie 10 May 2007, 12:53:53 GMT Trains and plane confusion I am sure Royal Maroc and Virgin Atlantic will understand if Eurostar ends up winning.......
 | | |
Eurostar Eurostar are obviously not an airline but the judging team felt that they were such a strong candidate that they should be included in the airline category that being the closest match
If the TravelMole readers have suggestions for new or alternative catgories for 2008 we would be happy to hear your ideas.

Cruise Ferry Site Award The nominations for the web awards are open to anybody and were launched back in January. The shortlist is determined by a body independently of TravelMole. If the winner is obvious, I for one am not sure which one and why?
The whole awards process is designed to be as fair and above board as possible. We advertised for judges and received and accepted many. The entire nominations list, over 1,000, is given to an independent school of tourism who determine, in their opinion, the top three sites in each category. This shortlist is then given to a team of six judges, who have been identified many times on the site, whom in turn rank each catgeory shortlist into a 1-2-3
The results are consolidated and the winner determined and announced on May 24th.
I am not sure what is farcical about any of this.

Claire Quarrie 10 May 2007, 10:50:17 GMT Train or plane? Since when was Eurostar an airline??

Got Opinions 10 May 2007, 09:11:00 GMT Cruise/Ferry Award Farce' Seriously what websites were nominated if that is the final 3.Pretty obvious winner to anyone with common sense
 | | |
Claire Quarrie 11 May 2007, 09:04:03 GMT meta search/OTA AustraliaTravelMarket.com is also a meta search site, rather than an online travel agency.
