US airlines want lighter bags
Comments: 4

Message from the US airlines: pack light or pay up.

United earlier this month announced that free bag check-in will be limited to one per person. Starting May 5, it will charge passengers with domestic nonrefundable economy tickets $25 to check a second bag.

Exempt from the fee are those with Premier status or higher in United's Mileage Plus program or those with Silver status or higher within the Star Alliance. The new charge will be applied to tickets purchased in the future.

In a similar attempt to combat rising fuel prices, Spirit Airlines said that it would double charges for all checked bags: to $10 a bag if reserved, and to $20 without reservations.

makes sense
Some folks need a baggage checking service; some don't. It seems only fair that those of us who don't should not have to subsidize those who do. Pay for what you need, I believe.

fat is still free
So, at 160lbs with 100kgs of luggage, I'll pay a king's ransom to fly. If, on teh other hand, i'm 260lbs, take up two seats, and don't carry any luggae - not even personal hygene products - I fly for peanuts (and probably eat a cwt of them anyway). I paid attention in physics class and that just doesn't make sense. Why don't the airlines just charge by the lbs - that way it's up to you whether you carry your luggae in a suitcase or in your ass.

Is this coing to turn into another Fuel Surchage Cost to PAX
is this going to be another way the airlines will take more money from PAX to line their pockets! it is bad enought that they are hitting the people who can not afford it let alone allowing premier & elite members/flyers to not have to pay anthing when they already have a generous baggage allowance..... perhaps if they cut back on this it would not have to hit those who do actually work hard & have to pay for their flights....is this going to be by segment or trip, it will soon mount up if you have multiple segments to pay this for!
