Booking continental rail online ‘infuriatingly difficult’
Comments: 15

Trains from the UK to the Continent cannot be booked online as easily as airline tickets, a new study reveals.

A panel was asked to search for and simulate booking return airline and train tickets on the internet to Barcelona, Rome, Brussels and Munich.

Despite a 98% success rate for booking airline tickets, only 13 of the 40 journeys (33%) were successfully booked by train, meaning 27 (67%) journeys could not be booked.

For those that were able to book, it took almost double the amount of time to book a train ticket (average time = 11.9 minutes) as it did to book a flight (average time = 6.6 minutes).

Furthermore, the cost of train tickets to these destinations was on average, 70% more expensive than flying, according to the research into the state of train booking systems on the web by operator responsibletravel.com.

Brussels proved the easiest and cheapest of the four cities to reach by train with panellists taking an average of seven minutes to book a train ticket and the cost proving to be just 6% more than flying. But half of the panel still failed to make it to the booking point.

The company’s managing director Justin Francis, managing director, responsibletravel.com said: "To reduce our carbon emissions we need to start travelling more by train and less by plane in Europe.

“However, European rail travel is at present, infuriatingly difficult to book from the UK.

“Whilst there is a need for more thorough research into the problems, our poll has shown that it currently takes little more than five minutes to book a flight online to anywhere in Europe yet to book a train ticket to the same destination can be very challenging indeed.

"While improving rail infrastructure and finding ways to make train travel cheaper is essential in the longer term, there is also an urgent need to make what is currently available much easier to book for travellers.

"If we are going to work together for a lower carbon future for travel and tourism, this is an essential part of the solution."

* Panellists were asked to search for travel departing Friday, April 3 anytime after 15.00, returning on Sunday, April 5, anytime after 15.00.

Results for each city:

Barcelona

·                         100% of the panel were able to successfully book a flight, just 30% could successfully book a train ticket
·                         The average booking time for those that did successfully book was 8 minutes for flights compared to 13 minutes for trains
·                         The average cost of a train ticket was 115% more than a plane ticket (£262 vs £122)
Rome
·                         100% of the panel were able to successfully book a flight, just 20% could successfully book a train ticket
·                         The average booking time for those that did successfully book was 6 minutes for flights compared to 14 minutes for trains
·                         The average cost of a train ticket was 57% more than a plane ticket (£221 vs £141)
Brussels
·                         90% of the panel were able to successfully book a flight, just 50% could successfully book a train ticket
·                         The average booking time for those that did successfully book was 5 minutes for flights compared to 7 minutes for trains
·                         The average cost of a train ticket was 6% more than a plane ticket (£119 vs £112)
Munich
·                         100% of the panel were able to successfully book a flight, just 30% could successfully book a train ticket
·                         The average booking time for those that did successfully book was 7 minutes for flights compared to 14 minutes for trains
·                         The average cost of a train ticket was 96% more than a plane ticket (£271 vs £138)

Stand your ground
Absolutely agree. Stand firm, it is tough out there but as we keep hearing, these days, in good or bad times, people consider their holiday a priority not a luxury. This industry sucessfully shoots itself in the foot every year with all the 'exclusive deals, special offers, 50% discounts, free this, free that' etc. that seem to take effect from Boxing Day onwards! What other industry slashes its prices during its peak selling period?? We can't blame the recession as it happens every single year, all this does is cheapen the product and in turn the whole industry. The consumer's not daft, they know how it works. We never discount, we simply provide competitive rates from the start, provide a good service and therefore have no problem finding customers. Besides, what message does it send to your loyal early bookers when you start giving your travel products away for next to nothing just because someone books late, it's unfair and will lose you customers in the long term.

Lots of advertising here
Nothing wrong with businesses promoting themselves of course but what this item has revealed is the high cost of rail travel versus air travel. Not much encouragement to the "Greens" here, surely?

Their own worst enemy!
In two out of the last three years, I would have booked to go on holiday to France by train, BUT the ridiculous 3 month advance booking rule put a stop to this. If you book in January to travel in July, surely SNCF realise that you can't wait until April to find out that the trains are full, and the flights have now quadrupled in price. If trains could be booked a year in advance, they might attract a lot of custom away from airlines.

Rail travel in France
Have booked a number of rail trips in France though recently (last year I think) SNCF changed the website which has gone from being relatively easy to navigate to enfuriating!

Help is at hand
Indeed, because of the heterogenious structure of the European Railways booking systems, itb is still a hassle to book continental rail tickets online. That is why seven European railways have founded the Railteam High-speed Alliance (www.railteam.eu) to sooth the hurdles for international rail journeys. In the UK and Ireland customers and the trade can seek assistance e.g. by the DB Bahn UK Booking Centre for rail journeys to Europe and Germany (see Who is who section)

This is news?
I have been in the travel business for nearly half a century and on my first day, when I commented about something being tricky, my boss said, "Tricky? You wait until you have to do CONTINENTAL RAIL!"

And yes, I found it was more difficult than air - trains, by their very nature provide far more comprehensive, and therefore far more complex, journey possibilities.

But, as those who have taken the trouble to acquire the skills will know, continental rail is something that can be mastered with a bit of effort just as can any other travel skill.

Of course, the internet has made everyone a "travel expert" and such experts commonly complain if the online answer doesn't leap out at them.

As has been said many times before - although the internet is fine for simple bookings, more complex booking need the skills that competent travel agents possess.

Continental rail is just one of a number of businesses opportunities that agents overlook at their peril.

Always book with the experts
I would advise those finding it difficult to book continental rail travel to consider travlling with the experts. Over 25 years experience and as the UK’s leading operator of rail-based holidays, Great Rail Journeys and Treyn Holidays offer escorted itineraries on almost 200 holidays throughout Europe and beyond; whilst railselect.com accommodates tailor-made enquiries for itineraries. Full details can be found on www.GreatRail.com, www.treynholidays.co.uk and www.railselect.com

Too right! But you tested the eassy bit - travel from UK to other countries. Now try the difficult bit - travelling within Europe - it's a nightmare!

It certainly is difficult
The complexity of booking train tickets is a major obstacle for us when trying to promote train travel over flights to our clients. This survey is spot on and I suspect many people like me, who handle train bookings on a daily basis, would feel that they could have written the survey results without the need for a panel!

If the panel had tried to book dates more than 3 months in advance, then they would have had a 100% failure rate to all destinations except Brussels, as train companies in Europe simply don't accept bookings further in advance than 3 months, even though Eurostar start accepting bookings at 4 months (in itself another headache when trying to secure cheap tickets to up with SNCF trains). This is another major negative point in comparison to the airlines, and surely not a complex issue to solve, if the timetables have been published (which they have).

Until the train companies can get together and feed into a single, simple-to-use reservations engine and also start to take the airlines on on price, then it is going to remain a difficult job trying to persuade people onto the trains instead of taking the plane.

As a service to our clients, we offer to take on the pain of making their train reservations without a service charge, but sadly the commission levels are very low and we lose out each time we do so.

Finally, it would be helpful if Rail Europe's phone line was not an 0844 number seeing as one regularly sits on hold for 5 minutes being charged for the pleasure, whilst they claw back the small amount of commission I might or might not earn on the train tickets they sell. Hrumph
