Getting around

Hiring a car is the best and most convenient way to explore the state. Located in the heart of the Mid-Atlantic Region, Delaware is centrally located along the I-95 corridor and within driving distance from New York, Philadelphia and Washington D.C.

Get a true taste of this artsy town and enjoy dozens of food and craft vendors at the Bug & Bud Festival. It celebrates two of Milford's most cherished symbols, the ladybug and the tree. There's entertainment throughout the day, a Ladybug and Tree costume parade, ladybug decorated paddle boat rides, children's games and more.

The old Beneficial Building in Wilmington began its new life as a 96-suite Residence Inn by Marriott, in March of this year. It is the first hotel to open in downtown Wilmington in nearly 20 years and more are on the way as the city's hotel boom is only beginning. Hotel DuPont is currently being renovated and Hyatt Place will be arriving on Wilmington Riverfront this year.

Iron Hill, a hugely popular brewery and restaurant with locations in Wilmington, New Jersey and Pennsylvania, opened its fourteenth location in Rehoboth Beach this year on Memorial Day weekend.

Fun fact: Delaware has an official insect; it's the ladybug.

Cape Henlopen State Park, Sussex County: A designated swimming beach, accessible from the Lewes entrance to the park, provides lifeguard patrols between Memorial Day weekend and Labor Day. The park's open spaces feature many other activities. An 18-hole disc golf course encourages friendly competition, and basketball courts promote more active exercise

Rehoboth Beach, Sussex County: Just outside the mouth of the Delaware Bay on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean, Rehoboth Beach has long been a popular vacation spot. Following your surf session, you find dozens of restaurant on the beach. The most famous is Kaisy's Delights, the first Austrian Kaiserschmarrn pastry maker in the USA. Seafood lovers can order it fresh at a number of oyster houses, fish houses and raw bars.

Firefly Music Festival, Dover: The Woodlands in Dover, Delaware is transformed into a music-lovers paradise for four days in June for the Firefly Music Festival. People from all ages and backgrounds gather together, camp out and enjoy sets from some of the best acts in the world. The 2018 line up included Eminem, Kendrick Lamar, Arctic Monkeys, the Killers and many more.

Fort Delaware State Park, New Castle County: On Pea Patch Island, costumed interpreters bring US Civil War history to life at the 1859 Union fortress that once housed Confederate prisoners. While there, see wading birds nesting in the surrounding area.

Du Pont Estates, Wilmington: Wooded groves and rolling hills dominate the landscape and stately homes stand at the end of long, curving driveways. This is 'Chateau Country,' Delaware's most exclusive region and for generations the home of the DuPont family and its grand mansions. Today, many of those spectacular homes and their stunning gardens are open to visitors, giving travellers a peek into a long-lost world of splendour and beauty.
