Discover the heritage of music, bourbon and horses, which for many centuries have been an integral part of the heritage of Tennessee, Kentucky, Ohio and Indiana. This itinerary begins and ends in Nashville taking those who choose to explore it on a loop through the cities and rural hotspots of where the Midwest and Southeast states meet.

Nashville, Tennessee, to Tullahoma, Tennessee


Start off your trip in Nashville, Tennessee, the "Birthplace of Bluegrass." Nashville has many places to hear bluegrass music while you are in town as well as distilleries where you can taste some of the hand-crafted Tennessee whiskey, such as the famous Jack Daniel's Distillery in Lynchburg. On your way to Tullahoma, take a scenic detour to Short Springs Natural Area and once in the town take a tour of Cascade Hollow Distilling Co. and learn the exciting history of this Tennessee brand.

Tullahoma, Tennessee, to Lexington, Tennessee
via Pigeon Forge, Tennessee

Drive three hours to Knoxville, Tennessee, where you can watch a live radio performance at The WDVX Blue Plate Special and from there head to Pigeon Forge, the home of Dolly Parton's theme park, Dollywood. Continue North to Lexington through the Daniel Boone National Forest, to Kentucky's horse capital. Here you can explore famous farms and stables where champion racehorses are kept, and enjoy some house-smoked barbeque at a local smokehouse.

Lexington, Kentucky, to Versailles, Kentucky

Soak in the beauty of horse country on the half-hour drive from Lexington to Versailles. Make a stop at WinStar Farm to see the stallion barns and breeding sheds before driving onto Lawrenceburg's Wild Turkey Distillery for a tour and tasting. From Versailles it is easy to visit local distilleries, such as the Woodford Reserve Distillery, also a National Historic Landmark and one of Kentucky's oldest and smallest distilleries.

Versailles, Kentucky, to Indianapolis, Indiana
via Cincinnati, Ohio

Drive for two hours to Cincinnati, Ohio to walk across the "Purple People Bridge," a pedestrian walkway that connects Cincinnati to Newport, Kentucky. The riverfronts of these Ohio and Kentucky cities are linked with options for entertainment, dining, nightlife, festivals, parks and attractions. Immerse yourself further in the new urban craft distillery scene after the two-hour drive from Cincinnati, Ohio to Indianapolis, Indiana, such as Hotel Tango artisan distillery – the first artisan distillery in Indianapolis since Prohibition.

Indianapolis, Indiana, to Owensboro, Kentucky
via Louisville, Kentucky

Drive two hours to the mecca of American horse racing in Louisville, Kentucky, where Churchill Downs is located, the home of the famous Kentucky Derby horse race. After a day at the track, why not try some bourbon? The whiskey experience at Stitzel-Weller Distillery is located just 5 miles from downtown Louisville. Head on to Owensboro, home of the Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame & Museum. Here, you can explore interactive exhibits, posters, costumes, live instrument demonstrations and more.

Owensboro, Kentucky to Nashville, Tennessee

On your way back to Nashville, drive 45 minutes to Rosine to tour the Bill Monroe Museum, home to the legacy of Bill Monroe, the "father of bluegrass." The museum pays homage to his life and career and Rosine is only a short distance from his birthplace and boyhood home, which you can also tour. Afterwards, drive two hours and wrap up your journey back in Nashville, Tennessee.
