$1 airfare between Melbourne and Sydney!
A report in The Herald Sun says that a new airline is offering $1 fares between Melbourne and Sydney – but there is a catch, with the cheap Norfolk Air fare only applying on one flight a week, on Fridays, from Sydney’s international terminal to Melbourne.
Norfolk Air acting CEO Ewan Wilson said yesterday that his airline was in a David versus Goliath struggle with carriers such as Jetstar, Virgin Blue and new entrant Tiger Airways, adding “If you look at what’s happening with Tiger and Jetstar, it’s a bit of a sideshow.”
Mr Wilson said. “The real battle will be on the main trunk route of Melbourne-Sydney.”
Norfolk Air, which is using aircraft operated by failed domestic carrier OzJet, will start direct flights between Melbourne and Norfolk Island from October 19.
The non-stop service will leave Melbourne airport’s international terminal at 12.50pm on Fridays and it will have arrived in Melbourne via Sydney at 11.50am.
Mr Wilson said fares from $1 would be available on the Sydney-Melbourne leg.
Norfolk Air operates a Boeing 737 jet with 98 economy and eight business class seats.
