Agents brace themselves for panic calls
Travel agents are bracing themselves for panic calls from their customers today following Britain’s vote to leave the EU.
On the travel industry’s Facebook page Travel Gossip, one agent said she’s had two calls already this morning – one from a customer asking if she’s got time to get a new passport for her holiday in September and another asking for currency advice.
Other agents said they had also received calls from customers confused by how the Brexit vote will impact their travel plans.
Many made light of the situation, with one agent posting: "Let the fun commence."
The news of Britain’s departure prompted Heathrow Airport to post a statement on its Twitter page saying the airport is ‘operating normally and there are no changes to security or immigration procedures’.
Discover Ferries also issued a statement to reassure holidaymakers and other ferry users that it would be ‘business as usual’ following the UK referendum result to exit the European Union.
Bill Gibbons, director of industry body Discover Ferries, which represents 12 ferry companies, said: "Holidaymakers can rest assured that this decision will not affect their summer travel plans. Ferries will continue to travel as normal and there will be no changes to routes or schedules and it will be business as usual."
Cheapflights managing director Andrew Shelton urged the British public to keep calm and carry on holidaying.
As the pound plummets to its lowest level against the dollar since 1985, he said holidaymakers shouldn’t assume that Brexit means all that will be lost.
