American Airlines flights disrupted by iPad glitch

Tuesday, 29 Apr, 2015 0

Several American Airlines flights were delayed late Tuesday following an iPad app glitch, the airline said.

Some flights were forced to return to the gate to enable a Wi-Fi connection to fix the problem.

American said it had identified what caused the malfunction but gave no more details, saying it had affected ‘a few dozen flights.’

The airline replaced paper based flight information documents and navigational charts with iPads two years ago in an effort to save money and improve efficiency.

American also touted the move as an environmentally friendly one as the use of 8,000 iPads for pilots replaces the need for 24 million pages of documents and saves the carrier about  400,000 gallons of fuel every year.

It is thought the problem may have stemmed from the latest software update which took place last week, an American pilot said.
