American Airlines grounds 100 planes over pilot shortage
American Airlines says it has been forced to ground 100 jets as it doesn’t have enough pilots to fly them. They are smaller regional jets.
American has tried to fill pilot vacancies by hiring from its regional carriers leaving a shortage of pilots flying regional routes.
“There is a supply and demand imbalance right now, and it really is within the regional carrier ranks,” American Airlines CEO Robert Isom said.”
Isom said the airline has been able to partly offset it by flying less frequently on larger jets on these regional routes.
