Ancash region in Peru named the “World’s Best Adventure Destination” by UN Tourism

Peru once again confirms its status as a global reference for adventure tourism. The Áncash region has just been crowned “World’s Best Adventure Destination” at the TOURISE Awards 2025, organized two weeks ago in Riyadh (Saudi Arabia) by the United Nations Tourism Organization (UN Tourism).

This distinction reinforces Peru‘s position as one of the most attractive countries for nature, trekking, and wide-open spaces enthusiasts, a segment particularly sought after by French travelers in search of authenticity and spectacular landscapes.

Located just an hour’s flight from Lima, Áncash, located in the Peruvian Andes, is famous for its Cordillera Blanca, the turquoise lagoons of the Llanganuco quebrada, including Orconcocha and Chinancocha. The region is known for its iconic peaks, among which Huascarán, the highest peak in Peru at 6,768 m. height.

The region is also the cradle of some of the most renowned trekking circuits in the world: Santa Cruz, Huayhuash, and mountaineering routes accessible to both enthusiasts and experts. Áncash has distinguished itself for the quality of its adventure offerings, the sustainable management of its protected areas, and the active involvement of local communities.

This recognition not only values Áncash’s environmental richness but also the efforts made to develop responsible tourism, rooted in the territories and benefiting local populations. Áncash also offers remarkable cultural assets. Among them is the Chavín de Huántar archeological complex, which this year celebrates the 40th anniversary of its inscription on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Growing travelers interest for Peru adventure tourism

For foreign visitors, this distinction opens a new chapter in the discovery of the country beyond the most well-known destinations like Cusco or Arequipa. The international visibility granted to Áncash highlights a region, which is still little explored.

It indeed offers considerable potential for trekking, mountaineering, naturalist exploration, and community experiences. It represents an opportunity to enrich the existing tourist offerings and encourage the diversification of travel toward regions with a strong natural character.

The TOURISE Awards, organized by Saudi Arabia in cooperation with UN Tourism, annually recognize the most innovative, inspiring, and committed destinations in the transformation of tourism on an international scale. Their objective is to highlight initiatives that combine excellence, sustainability, and innovation.
