ANZ Bank donates to Fiji tourism campaign
Fiji’s Tourism Action Group sadi that it had received much needed funds from an unlikely source to salvage Fiji’s ailing tourism industry, with ANZ Fiji donating $75,000 to the TAG campaign to raise $1 million for marketing campaigns in Australia and New Zealand “to boost the number of tourists visiting Fiji”.
The tourist industry, Fiji’s biggest foreign exchange earner, has been hit hard by the December 5 military coup with some fearful tourists staying away because of the political uncertainty, which is now all over.
The strong travel advisories put out by Fiji’s main tourism markets (Australia, New Zealand) was no help either and many hotels rooms remained empty, with workers across the industry losing their jobs.
TAG (that includes all tourism stakeholders such as hotels, tour operators, airlines) was reactivated December last year to help rescue the industry, with the group saying earlier that Fiji’s tourism recovery campaign to lure tourists back to the country will cost the industry over $5 million.
The first phase of the recovery campaign that includes price discounts on accommodation, transfers and airfares and marketing was launched in short haul markets such as Australian and New Zealand late December.
ANZ Fiji GM Robert Bell said that tourism is vital to Fiji’s economy and thousands of families rely on it for livelihood, adding, “ANZ has had a long association with tourism in Fiji and it is appropriate that we help in the recovery of this industry which is so important to our customers and the community in which we do business.”
TAG congratulated ANZ on being the first to support the campaign.
