Average delay per flight in the EU soars by over 400%

Airline demand and capacity of Europe’s airspace is at risk of never closing, according to the latest report of the Single European Sky’s Performance Review Body.

It says EU states again failed to provide adequate airspace capacity in 2022.

It reports delays ‘significantly exceeded the target’ with a 400% increase in the average delay per flight.

The report highlights a failure to meet agreed performance plans for European airspace.

The report contends it is unlikely to get better any time soon.

Combined with robust passenger demand, this is a ‘perfect storm’ that will continue to impact airline operations.

Managing Director of A4E, Ourania Georgoutsakou, said: “Airlines are cruising when it comes to their recovery while Europe’s airspace remains stuck on the ground. We can’t afford another repeat.”

“Europe’s passengers deserve better.”

“This is a call to action. We need to bolster Europe’s airspace capacity, drive reforms and pave the way for airlines to operate more efficiently.”
