Bomb blasts hit Athens
Exactly 100 days before the Olympic Games is due to start in Athens, a police station in the Greek capital has been hit by three bomb blasts.
The explosions took place in the early hours of this morning and are believed to have caused substantial damage and injured at least one officer. Though nobody has yet claimed responsibility, the BBC News website reports that suspicion has fallen on left-wing groups that have carried out similar attack in previous years.
Whoever was responsible for the explosions, they will no doubt raise concerns over security. A police spokesman is quoted as saying: “The police are treating this matter very seriously with only three months to go until the Games. You have three sophisticated time bombs going off outside a police station; that’s serious enough.”
The BBC reports that the police station is situated in the Kalithea region of the city, which is where many Olympic officials will be accommodated during the Games.
