Bondi beach stubs out cigarettes
Smoking is now outlawed on world-famous Bondi beach, with plans to extend the ban to other areas.
As of today, the ban was introduced on three Sydney beaches – Bondi, Bronte and Tamarama – with a fine of AUD110 being introduced after an “introductory” period during which the ban will be advertised to beach goers.
According to the Sydney Morning Herald newspaper, the ban currently only covers the sand, while lighting up on the promenades behind the three beaches will be allowed for the time being.
The mayor of Waverley Council, which controls the beaches, is quoted as saying: “We’ll do the beach first, as that’s where most of the butts are staying.
“A lot of people who smoke on the beach and put it out on the sand do not realise that’s where it stays. The more you make people conscious of it, the more that people will realise that if they want a fag they’ll go up on the prom and dispose of it properly.”
As reported by News From Abroad, Sydney’s Manly Beach banned smoking in May.
