Capital of Culture Liverpool may not be ‘people’s choice’
NewcastleGateshead was voted top English city break in a recent newspaper poll, while European Capital of Culture 2008 winner, Liverpool, only just scraped into the top 20.
NewcastleGateshead, the bookmakers favourite to win the Capital of Culture award, was voted by readers of the Guardian and Observer to be the top English city. In a survey of the UK, Edinburgh and Glasgow took the top spots.
Liverpool came 19th in the British poll, and the second highest place bidder for the Capital of Culture award was Cardiff in tenth place.
Newcastle City Councillor, Tony Flynn said: “The survey demonstrates how popular NewcastleGateshead has become. It shows that our disappointment over not being awarded Capital of Culture in 2008, will not hold us back in the future. We are the people’s choice.”
