Caribbean island first to ban all visitors from Ebola-hit nations

St Lucia has become the first Caribbean country to ban all visitors from Ebola-stricken countries.

The prime minister announced yesterday that the island would bar entry to anyone from Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone until further notice.

Kenny Anthony justified the travel ban by saying that St Lucia was a poor, small country that doesn’t have the capacity to ‘manage any crisis that lands on our doorstep’, said the Associated Press.

Passengers from West African nation Nigeria will be required to present a recent medical certificate clearing them of the virus.

Specifics of how this might work were not immediately provided.

Meanwhile, the Czech Republic has become the latest country to introduce screening of passengers at the Prague’s international airport in efforts to prevent the spread of Ebola.

All passengers arriving at the airport will have to answer questios about their whereabouts in the 42 days prior to their arrival and about their travel plans in the Czech Republic.

Those who visited Liberia, Sierra Leone or Guinea will have to undergo a medical check.

The measure will start at on Tuesday, even though there are currently no direct flights from West Africa to Prague. A special military hospital designed to treat the highly infectious disease will be prepared to admit patients.
