Caribbean stakeholders join forces for green initiative

An alliance has been formed between the public and private sectors in the Caribbean and Latin America to address unsustainable tourism development and climate change.

Launching at an event in Barbados, the Sustainable Destinations Alliance for the Americas (SDAA) claims to be the largest initiative of its kind to focus on destination sustainability in the Americas.

It is being funded by the US Permanent Mission to the Organization of American States and Royal Caribbean International through its Ocean Fund.

Other stakeholders include the Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO) and NGO Sustainable Travel International.

Each participating destination will be evaluated for their destination management practices to highlight areas that need improvement.

The destinations will also have access to an online sustainable tourism course and a monitoring framework which will help track key performance metrics.

Non-profit Sustainable Travel International will conduct the assessments of each destination.

This SDAA initiative is the first stage of a program that hopes to extend to 30 destinations over the next few years.

Royal Caribbean also launched its destinationsfortomorrow.org online resource for destination decision-makers who wish to assess their sustainability standards.

CTO Secretary General Hugh Riley believes multi-sector partnerships are the most effective way to achieve sustainable tourism.

"By bringing to bear the views of the public, private, and NGO sectors, this initiative supports our mandate to establish best practices in sustainable tourism," he said.
