Cathay sued for gross negligence over unaccompanied minor mishap

A father is suing Hong Kong carrier Cathay Pacific for failing to provide an unaccompanied minor service for his son.

Ram Prasad Poosaala accused the airline of ‘deficiency of service and gross negligence’ when his 12-year old son flew to India alone.

He is seeking US$250,000 in compensation from the airline.

The lawsuit claims Cathay failed to provide assistance when landing in Hyderabad Airport even though the boy was wearing a ‘Meet and Assist Service’ badge.

After waiting for almost two hours he was helped through immigration by another passenger.

Cathay first offered Poosaala US$75 compensation and then later raised it to US$200.

This was turned down as not sufficient due to ‘mental anguish’.

The compensation amount sought is based on guidelines set out by the International Air Transport Association, the lawsuit said.
