Cathay union steps up industrial action threat

Cathay Pacific Airways Flight Attendants’ Union has authorised its leaders to launch work-to-rule action against the airline to support its demand for higher pay.

Cathay management held a press conference yesterday to say it is confident flights will not be affected during the Lunar New Year holidays.

Cathay said it is deeply disappointed with the work-to-rule threat but is confident the dispute will be resolved before the big takeoff.

But the union warned industrial action – delaying flights – might happen “anytime” if the company does not heed its call to reopen salary talks.

A company source told the Hong Kong Standard that industrial action is unlikely to materialise.

“Look at their track record. They have threatened quite a number of times in the past but nothing serious has happened,” the source said.
